Iron Infusion Therapy
What is Iron-Deficiency?
Iron-deficiency occurs when the blood doesn’t make enough red blood cells. This, in turn, affects the amount of oxygen received throughout your body.
Iron is a mineral in your body that forms hemoglobin, which is the component that makes it possible for red blood cells to deliver oxygen throughout your body.
Without the right amount of iron in your blood, your body cannot produce enough hemoglobin, and this may cause you to develop a condition known as iron-deficiency anemia.
The following groups of people are at highest risk for iron-deficiency anemia:
- People who have undergone major surgery or going cosmetic surgery might need iron infusion.
- Vegetarians and other people whose diets do not include iron-rich foods.
- People with peptic ulcer disease.
- Women who menstruate heavily.
- People with gastrointestinal diseases such as celiac disease (sprue), inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis, or Crohn disease.
- People who have undergone gastric bypass operations.
Iron Infusion Before Cosmetic Surgery
- If your iron levels are very low, your surgeon may recommend an infusion of iron into your blood prior to surgery. Intravenous infusion provides a dose of iron directly into your bloodstream through a vein to increase your iron level.
- Increasing your iron stores by either taking medicines or having an infusion prior to surgery reduces the risk that you will need a blood transfusion during or after the surgery.
- We commonly get requests for iron infusion before BBL Surgery, Liposuction procedure, Tummy Tuck, Mommy Makeovers, and Breast Reduction/Lift.
What Do We Need From You Before Your Iron Infusion?
- Blood work (available to be done in spa if needed).
- Schedule your iron infusion 4-6 weeks before surgery.
